![]() I feel like we get a lot more Bait this season.Įhasz: Yeah! We finally get to work the notion into the plot that they're delicious, and that deliciousness has value in a very scary place. I think there are so many cool stories we could tell there. ![]() ![]() I just wish we got to spend more time there. Devon is all about morally gray and sad characters, so I think it was a good fit for all of us. We got to set that up, and I love that stuff, like Uncharted, and I know Aaron does too. Scumport came out of having this place where it was like, "What if Rayla had been here before? What if, during her travels looking for Viren, this was a place she had been before?" Richmond: Ideas started coming out writing Season 3, like, "What if there was this rogue element? Where do the morally gray people live, and what do they do?" We knew going into the Ocean Book, this idea of actually going onto the sea and getting the characters there. We spent a lot of time on the human side of the border for the first two seasons, and there wasn't that much going on on the Xadian side in terms of the amount of screen time it got. We got to go to these places that are weird, cool, and interesting. The advantage of getting to go into Xadia is that we got to play with a lot more stuff. The answer was basically, "Put more dragons in." Anything with dragons gets clicked on, so we decided to give the fans what they want. When we did the box art for the first three seasons, one of the things they shared with you is what box art does better and what gets clicked on the most. You dial up the presence of dragons throughout this season, too. I love the creature designs in Season 5, with the corrupted beasts. Communication is really hard! I think this gave us the chance to dig in, but with the emotional journey that they go on, there's a lot to come. Callum has other stuff in his life that made what happened worse, and I think Rayla has the same thing on her side, stuff in her life that she has to deal with too. While there's some introspection there, they're not done yet. Justin Richmond: As we were writing Season 4, it was like, "Well, we're going to have to deal with this at some point." I think this was a nice point where we were able to lean in and have these moments where they can evaluate what's going on and still set us up for some interesting stuff to come in the next few seasons. ![]() and help you find things that are affecting us and distorting our reactions. Good therapists help you dig through that B.S. We're able to bury a lot of the sources of whatever our emotional conflicts are. We repeat these things, build these walls, and they get very thick. All of us repeat defense mechanisms, behaviors, and adaptations to deal with trauma or whatever it is. With Season 5, he's looking back at his life and subconscious after using dark magic again.Įhasz: In a weird way, this is an opportunity for Viren. In Season 4, he had this new shot at life after being dead for two years. He's just experiencing it from the other side of the mirror this time. ![]() He went through this as a teen, and the implication that we hope people take from it he is in the exact same time, space, and experience that he was in then. It also alludes to the first time he went through this. Some of what's great about it is that it comes to recent things, like King Harrow, and goes deeper to suggestions of things that happened with his kids and his mentor, and it twists all that stuff. For us, it's an opportunity to use this to peek at some of the emotional trauma that's twisted up inside him, as if it's a little fresher, to refreshen it within himself. ![]()
